Inventing Siberia: Visions of the Russian East in the early nineteenth century.

Demonstrates that multifarious images of Siberia in the early nineteenth century were the product of the growing diversification and fragmentation of cultural and political thought in European Russia itself. Four discrete images or image clusters have been identified and serve as the focus of the analysis.
