Abstract
- The article discusses the figure of provincial authorities in the colonies of Spain known as alcaldes mayores, focusing on Santa María de los Lagos, Nueva Galicia, which was an autonomous kingdom of New Spain, now modern day Mexico. Particular focus is given to the relationships established by Felipe de Otaduy y Avendaño and Francisco Javier Arriola, the first and the last alcaldes mayores of María de los Lagos from 1686 to 1799. Subjects discussed include social networks during colonial times, the instauration of the Bourbon dynasty at the beginning of the 18th century, and the political elites in the colonial society.
