Abstract

Chava Rosenfarb arrived in Montreal in 1950 as a displaced person, survivor of the Holocaust and renowned Yiddish poet and writer. In the city, she formed extensive literary networks and would go on to become one of the world's most important Yiddish novelists and prose writers of the post-Holocaust period. This paper discusses Rosenfarb's experiences of Yiddish Montreal, her home until 1998 and where she authored her major prose works. It posits that the city's active Yiddish milieu nurtured Rosenfarb's literary career by placing her in a literary community of fellow literati even as the language faced a declining readership outside.
