Abstract

The article describes environmental protests against rain forest industrial logging on the Clayoquot Sound on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada in 1993. The local environmental group Friends of Clayoquot Sound established a Peace Camp at a clearcut logging site, resulting in the arrests of 856 activists for blocking lumbering roads. The protests promoted sustainable forestry policy, directed market campaigns at wood and paper companies, and protection of unlogged areas.
