The authors reflect on the large-scale commercial oil and shale gas extraction in North Carolina as of 2013 and further present recommendations for the horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing operations around the state and outlines implications of the drilling operations on public health. The authors suggest forming a legislative framework that guides state-of-the-art technologies and best practices and protects the health of citizens and ecosystems.
