Abstract

Background: Electroneuromyography (ENMG) is very important for clarification of the neurophysiological situation. In this study, we aimed to investigate the distribution of the electrophysiological findings in pre-diagnosed polyneuropathic patients in our region. Methods: The ENMG results of 921 polyneuropathic patients who admitted to our laboratory were evaluated. Results: The mean age of patients with pre-diagnosed polyneuropathy within 2 years was 40.77±22.23. A 451 of them were male (49%) (mean age: 39.64 ± 22.89) and 470 were female (51%) (mean age: 41.85 ± 21.54). Normal ENMG findings were found in 560 (%60.8) patients, whereas pathological findings were found in 361 patients (%39.2). Polyneuropathies due to the secondary systemic diseases were most commonly seen in the patient group: Diabetes, COPD, nephropathy, etc. (n=50, %13.9); Guillain-Barre syndrome (n=50, %13.9); multifocal motor neuropathy (n=5, %1.4); Hereditary Pressure Sensitive Neuropathy (n=5, %1.4). Conclusion: Polyneuropathies due to the secondary systemic diseases were most commonly seen in the patient group. In 39.2% of the patients, there was a concordance between the referral diagnosis and the results of ENMG. According to our results, we conclude that the patients referred to electro diagnostic tests should be evaluated with sufficient time and more carefully. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
