Abstract

The article discusses the authors' experience of teaching students to approach controlled assessments, a formal requirement of the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) examination in history in which students demonstrate their skills in extended historical writing. According to the authors, the controlled assessment can provide students with an opportunity to explore enquiry-based learning and creative historical thought.
