Abstract

The article reports on the initiation by the U.S. National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA) of the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite mission, to address the need to measure soil moisture and freeze/thaw state with global coverage. The mission was recommended by the National Research Council in their 2007 report.
