Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the Brazilian reality for the envenomations in the period from January 2009 to October 2012. This study allowed to obtain information such as notifying region, sex and age of individuals affected, the type of accident, the final classification and animals involved. We recorded 476.811 cases of envenomations in the period considered, and the Northeast and Southeast regions of Brazil that the most reported. The envenomations were most prevalent in men aged 20 to 39 years (n = 163 193). Based on the type of accidents, 42% were caused by scorpions, snakes by 23% and 19% by spiders. Most of these accidents were considered light and developed to cure. From the data of this study, we realized the need to develop strategies to promote sensitizing sending notifications to fill complete and reliable data, in addition to implementation of a computerized information system with forms containing fields required, providing the interconnection existing systems, in order to standardize the variables on the subject, increase the accuracy of data and reduce underreportin.
