Abstract

The article looks at the city of Karachi, Pakistan, as of 2013, focusing on the growth of the illegal methamphetamine (meth) business in the city. It outlines the history of the illegal drug trade in the region, citing the role of former Pakistani ruler Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq in facilitating heroin transport. It reports on the rising number of meth labs in Pakistan as well as in Iran. Other topics include police corruption, the Pakistan government's effort to limit access to meth production ingredients ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, violent crime rates in Karachi, and trends in drug addiction among Pakistanis.
