Abstract
- The author discusses the prevalence of electrical power outages caused by squirrels across the United States in locations such as Portland, Oregon, Evergreen, Montana, and Kalamazoo, Michigan. According to Matthew Olearczyk of the Electric Power Research Institute, squirrels cause power outages by simultaneously touching an energized component and a grounded piece of equipment which can cause a continuous fault. The author comments on how such outages reflect on ecology and the electric grid.
