Abstract

The article discusses Greek magical gems from collections such as the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts and the Sterling Memorial Museum at Yale University New Haven, Connecticut, which were used as amulets by ancient Greeks for desires such as childbirth, prevention of old age, and romantic conquest. Greek words and curses on the gems and depictions of mythological figures such as Medusa, the Jewish god Jahweh, and Artemis are discussed.
