Abstract

The objectives of this study were to describe the Political Culture National Survey (ENCUP2008) homophobia data and to carry out comparisons by gender, states, religion and political ideology. The survey ENCUP2008 used a national probability sample of 4,383 participants (without expansion factor), to whom a questionnaire with 76 closed questions was applied. More than half of the interviewed persons reported an attitude of acceptance toward homosexuality. Women, people without religion, those that practice their religion less, those of left polity ideology or residents in Guerrero, Baja California Sur and Yucatan showed more acceptance. It was observed that a high percentage of people without religion and low frequency of religious practice is what inclines the balance toward acceptance; in counterpoint, there was evidence of a lot of politically indefinite participants and a dominance of right-wing political identities, which supports conservative cultural forces.
