This is an analysis of three novels that describe terror under Trujillo's dictatorship. The scenery chosen to dramatize human right's violations during the 1937 genocide on Massacre River is presented in El Masacre se pasa a pie, by Prestol, Massacre River (Le Peuple des Terres Melées), by Philoctète and The Farming of Bones, by Danticat. These novels explore, among other themes, how the pronunciation of a word as ‘perejil' (parsley) is used to distinguish between a Dominican and a Haitian living in the frontier: a racialized discourse easens xenophobia, a fundamental aspect of the ideological discourse established by the urban elites of this historical period. The 1937 massacre destroys a multiethnic world and posits a racial, cultural, linguistic and religious discourse that consolidates a conservative republic under the imperative of homogeneity.
