Abstract

The article looks at the therapeutic use of bloodletting throughout medical history. Particular focus is given to the campaign of journalist William Cobbett against physician Benjamin Rush's use of bloodletting in the 1797 yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania which killed former U.S. President George Washington. It is argued that physicians often relied more on intuition and personal convictions than methodological evidence such as controlled trials.
