Abstract

The article discusses alcoholism among soldiers at Fort Hays in Kansas in the mid-to-late nineteenth century. It comments for reasons for alcoholism, including boredom and loneliness. The author considers ways in which soldiers obtained alcohol, including on base and at saloons. He reflects on consequences of drunkenness, including absence, desertion, and violence, and examines punishments, including court-martial, solitary confinement, and forced labor. Alcoholism among regimental band members is also addressed.
