Abstract

In road safety, it is known that drivers usually underestimate perceived risk and assume an excessive risk in their driving. From an opinion survey, this paper analyzes the degree of agreement between the subjects with the main causes of traffic accidents and the degree of risk they perceive and assume in their way of driving, as well as possible solutions to reduce traffic accidents. Results show that drug use, turning back and speeding, are closely related to the high risk subjects perceive and minimal risk they assume when facing with this situation. Subjects perceive risk but it is assumed in order to get their objective, even when such a risk can cause an accident. Perceived and assumed risk, seem to be very difficult to maintain optimum balance communicating vessels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
