Abstract
- The article discusses royal concubines in Ngaoundere, which is now part of northern Cameroon, from 1900 to 1960, focusing on the legal and social status of concubines. Topics include the conducting of interviews with women who had been concubines in the harem of Ngaoundere's laamiido (Muslim ruler), the system of slavery in West Africa, and everyday life in the harem. It is said that bearing children changed the legal and social status of concubines. The impact of Islamic law on concubinage and the status of female slaves is noted.
