Abstract

The symposium "Scholarly Digital Editions, Tools and Infrastructure" held in The Hague between 19th and 20th of March stressed on promoting the tools used to create scholarly digital editions and to point out the importance of interoperability for the future. After many mass digitization initiatives for preservation reasons, it is now the moment to develop and apply specific tools to give comprehensive access to all this material. The main purpose of Interedition was to create a space where experienced professionals share their story and their ways of practice to their peers who might not have the knowledge or the resources to undertake such initiative regarding the textual heritage. The projects described here were considered as best practice experiences in the field of textual scholarship and there were presented to serve both the specialized communities and the general public. By deciphering old texts contributes to promoting historical treasures and to better understand them. Some good examples of such practices are the creation of a digital edition of Codex Supraliensis, a very important manuscript shared among 3 institutions, and the digital reunification of the oldest Bible, Codex Sinaiticus. Both project relied strongly on the collaboration between professionals from all over the world. The case of Polish Digital Libraries Federation served as a very good example of national collaboration to create a platform for all digital libraries in Poland. This federation create a space for the 79 Polish digital libraries and they studied how these institutions use the OCR methods to transcribe the digitized text. From building digital editions, to the digital tools and infrastructures that aid the digital scholarship from digital text analysis and annotation, to community role/involvement, the symposium offered valuable insights into the current textual research and practice.
