Abstract

The article presents a case study of Chinese American religious practice focusing on the Bok Kai Temple in Marysville, California. According to the authors, a process of misinterpretation and cultural production resulted in the symbolic transformation of the Chinese God of the North into a Chinese American god of water and flood. Details on the Bok Kai festival and parade associated with the temple are also presented.
