This article provides a summary of the work carried out to control flooding in basins such as the Ebro, with an extremely varied climate and with many unregulated or poorly regulated watercourses. This has been made partly possible by the introduction of an Automatic Hydrological Information System, backed by an official network of water gauging stations and based on a Decision Support System (DSS), in an attempt to ensure that points in unregulated areas do not coincide with dam release points (on account of scale and in order to ensure manageable and sufficient discharge to provide suitable water levels) and to mitigate the effects at these points.
