Abstract

An essay is presented on the Chicago Teachers' Union (CTU). Particular focus is given to a 2012 strike by members of the CTU and to its possible role in a larger counterhegemonic education movement within the city. According to the authors, the CTU strike demonstrated the power of social movement unionism and inspired further efforts to resist neoliberal education policies. Details on the policies of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) are presented.
