Abstract

This article analyzes the mechanisms of politeness and impoliteness present in the editorials of the newspaper El Día (Tenerife. Spain). Theoretical Framework: Brown and Levinson’s initial proposal (1987) and other Spanish-speaking works by significant research groups. The Corpus: 54 texts published in 2009, through which we can see how the editorial is housed in a persuasive text that seeks to influence the reader's opinion by means of using many expressions and strategies that harm the image of politicians and journalists on the island of Gran Canaria, or of Spain as a nation, etc. The most common resources to discredit their images are: undervaluation, insult, hyperbole, the use of punctuation marks, personal attacks, etc. On the opposite side lie the positive self-image models. The numerous examples herein provide a good illustration of the type of text and language used. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
