Abstract

The article describes the case of a 56-year-old woman diagnosed with basilar invagination (BI) treated with a novel use of bone cement to aid atlanto-axial distraction. It discusses a technical variation of the technique by which anatomic realignment of the dens with successful decompression and fusion can be obtained and maintained by a single posterior approach only. The reproducibility, safety and efficiency of the approach in the treatment of spinal cord compression due to BI is discussed.
