The authors reflect on the psychiatric illness called bipolar disorder (BD), which is usually characterized by recurrent episodes of mania and depression related with a high rate of medical and psychiatric comorbidities. They cite the current authorized treatments for BD such as lithium, valproate and antipsychotics. They focus on the biological mechanisms that underlie the neuroprogression in BD.
