Abstract

The article discusses the impact of the disease chytridiomycosis caused by the chytrid fungus (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis) on amphibian populations, with information on the threat of extinction it poses for an estimated one-third of species. Topics include the effect of the bacterium Janthinobacterium lividum (J. lividum) on inhibiting chytrid fungal growth, the research of scientist Reid Harris on developing disease mitigation protocols using the bacteria, and Harris's hope to create a community-based probiotic to target diverse populations of amphibians with the same treatment.
