Abstract
- The article discusses three iconic images associated with Kansas in the 19th century, which include the paintings "Drouthy Kansas" by Henry Worrall, "The Spirit of Kansas" by Mary Bartlett Pillsbury Weston and "American Woman and Her Political Peers" by Henrietta Briggs-Wall. An overview of the appearance of the aforementioned paintings at the Chicago Columbian Exposition in 1893 (World's Fair) in Chicago, Illinois is provided. The paintings' themes of historic violence, women's political rights and immigration to Kansas are discussed. The relationship between the Woman's Christian Temperance Movement (WCTU) and the "American Woman and Her Political Peers" painting is also discussed.
