Abstract

Introduction: In recent years the production of hematopoietic cells, derived from umbilical cord blood (UCB), has been increasing worldwide as a treatment for various diseases. Objective: To know the prevalence of quality gynecological and neonatal in pregnant women for potential donors of UCB. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional retrospective study 360 infants and pregnant women in a probability sample. Normal pregnancies were included to value quality obstetric and neonatal UCB donation, according to the Mexican bank of umbilical cord questionnaire. We calculated the prevalence of donation and analyzed by Chi² test, analysis based on the program NCSS 2007. Discussion: We estimated 67% of potential donors based on the number of births per year. Features like normal labor, newborn healthy weight, adequate prenatal care, risk partner, multiparity, healthy pregnancy as possible donors. We were unable to evaluate important factors such as the use of tobacco, alcohol, drugs, tattoos, tuberculosis and HIV. Conclusions: Quality obstetric and neonatal in pregnant women for possible donation by 67% SCU was recorded. This makes an important number of SCU could lead to a cryopreservation program well directed in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
