Abstract

The article discusses economic and social conditions for working-class people living in New York City as of May 2013, with information on demonstrations by low-wage workers seeking wage increases. Topics include employment for poor people and immigrants who live in public housing but work in the wealth neighborhood of Manhattan; social conditions for low-income families in New York City; and the percentage of workers who belong to labor unions. The political power of organized labor in New York is examined, along with declining median household income.
