Abstract
- The article discusses the work of Chinese-born artist Cai Guo-Qiang, whose work incorporates fireworks and explosions. It comments on the impact of the Chinese Cultural Revolution on his family. The author explores influences on Cai, including Taoist spirituality, feng shui, and physics. He also addresses Cai's thoughts on topics including nuclear weapons and warfare, the big bang theory, and his move to the U.S. in the mid-1990s. Works by Cai discussed include the explosion project "The Earth Has Its Black Hole Too" in Hiroshima, Japan, and his fireworks sculpture created for the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.
