Abstract

The article discusses the U.S. motion picture industry's creation and promotion of family-appropriate films in the 1930s. Focus is given to the level of impact the Production Code developed by the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America, Inc. (MPPDA), had on the industry's shift away from the production of more adult-themed features during this period. Also examined is the connection between the rise of family films and the industry's embrace of sound in motion pictures. Family films discussed include "Little Women" and "Alice in Wonderland." The Catholic Church's role in the development of the MPPDA'S Production Code is also highlighted.
