Abstract

Road as an engineering artifact has become commonplace. Nobody feels surprised these days for anything that roads can accomplish: an efficient and safe support to car mobility. The most people can expect from them is a thoughtful and environment-friendly design and some mitigation of undesirable externalities. But the road is not just infrastructure since it can be understood from many different ways beyond what we engineers tend to see. Roads or let say the road network can be analyzed too from disciplines other than civil engineering, geography or landscape architecture. This paper advocates the use of the new network science and its underlying disciplines topology, graph theory and combinatorial mathematics as an alternative framework to understand better that giant structure: the road network.
