Abstract
- This article revisits the thesis of our 2005 book Transformational Public Service and responds to the question of what it takes to change the discipline by applying Emile Durkheim's notion of "collective effervescence" through means of empathy and transformational practices of institutions. We can enlarge the field of public administration to overcome its continued fixation on a narrowly managerial approach and find new ways to transform an otherwise languishing body of practice.
