Abstract

Endogenous depression may pose diagnostic problems when it is masked, as observed at the Lublin Department of Psychiatry, by pseudocyesis, kleptomania or euphoric syndromes caused by brain damage. Atypical depressions accompanied by delusional syndromes or drive disorders are sometimes incorrectly diagnosed as schizophrenia. A case of this kind was observed six years ago at the Department of Psychiatry in Lublin. At the time the case was being described, it seemed to be an incidental event. However, a dozen of cases of endogenous depression wrongly diagnosed as schizophrenia have been verified in the last year. For that reason another patient with an incorrect diagnosis of schizophrenia was described with an indication of the most frequent errors committed by psychiatrists. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
