Abstract

The article discusses the development of the Afghanistan National Institute of Music, founded in 2010, and its role in changing the social and cultural context of a country in which music was banned for years by the fundamentalist organization, the Taliban. The opportunities given to many young Afghan children through the school, including trips to the United States to visit Carnegie Hall and Broadway in New York, New York, are described, and the school's mission to include girls in music education is highlighted.
