Political Mobility in the Later Roman Empire*.

An essay is presented on political mobility within the aristocracy in the late Roman Empire. It comments on relations between provincial aristocrats and the civilian imperial bureaucracy, particularly considering recruitment to the imperial bureaucratic service. Other topics include differences between eastern and western parts of the Empire, upward social mobility, and the views of orator Libanius.
