Abstract

The article discusses the condition of English literary studies amidst the economic crisis in Europe. It states that the creation of intellectual and scientific cultures was the result of the process of industrialization, in which economic inequalities were being discouraged. It says that wit apart from science is used as a means to secular mortality. It adds that English poet Charles Dickens challenged humanities to survive the European recession and do some serious thinking to counter it.
