Abstract

The article discusses neuroscience theories of how memories are coded and stored in the neurons of the brain, noting the debate over whether each single memory is stored in a corresponding neuron or distributed across groups of neurons. An experiment is described in which activity in specific neurons in the hippocampus of patients was correlated with viewing photographs of specific celebrities. Other topics include the use of epileptic patients with implanted electrodes in brain monitoring research, the theory of concept cell neurons which respond to conceptual representations of memories, and the role of the hippocampus in object perception and memory formation.
