Abstract

Acute ataxia in infants may develop due to viral infections, drug intoxication, intercranial lesions. One of the first symptoms of neuroblastoma can be the combination of acute cerebral ataxia, and opsomyoclonus. A 19-month old male infant was admitted with complaints of ataxia, loss of balance and hand tremors. The neuron-specific enolase test revealed an increased level of 48 nglml (the normal level being <16 nglml), and spinal MRI revealed a hyperintense T2 signal mass that absorbed the contrast on the 7 - 9 dorsal vertebral levels. During his investigation, he developed opsomyoclomis. He was diagnosed as a Stage I neuroblastoma and no chemotherapy was approved. After the surgery, the patient's tremors, ataxia and opsomyoclonus continued. After the patient was put on steroids, opsomyoclonus subsided, but the ataxia persisted. Opsomyoclonus in pediatric patients with neuroblastoma is among good prognostic criteria, but it could cause permanent neurological deficits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
