Abstract

The article discusses research by surgeon Alan Flake on stem cell and gene therapy for birth defects and genetic disorders in the womb. Flake suggests that bone marrow transplantation in unborn infants with sickle-cell anemia or other gene disorders would avoid risk of donor rejection because their immune systems are not fully developed. Also explored is research on fetal gene therapy with viral vectors for treatment of Gaucher's disease and gene therapy for fetal growth restriction.
