Abstract

The article presents a historical sketch of Operation Harling, a mission of the British Special Operations Executive (SOE) in November 1942 to destroy a railway viaduct used by the Axis powers of World War II, located in Gorgopotamos, Greece. Particular focus is given to the leadership of British Lieutenant Colonel E.C.W Myers and Major C.M. Woodhouse in getting members of the Greek National Liberation Army (ELAS) and the National Republican Greek League (EDES), opposing Greek political movements, to cooperate in the mission. The potential for civil war in Greece following World War II is discussed, as is support of the Greek monarchy by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
