Abstract

Objective: This descriptive study was carried out with the purpose of examining the negative symptoms, anxiety and pain in individuals which are donating blood. Material and Methods: The population of the study was consisted of individuals, the sample of 142 who are donating blood participating in a Laboratory. The data were collected between 2011 until January-February. Questionnaire, visuel analog-state anxiety scala was used in collecting data. Kruskal-Wallis, t test, Wilcoxon One-Way ANOVA and Pearson's correlation coefficient was used in analysing the data. Written consent was obtained from institutions and verbal consent was obtained from individuals, necessary to study. Results: Thirtyone percent of the individuals were in 18-30 age group, 56.3% were female, 36.6% are high school graduates, 69.7% were donated bloodletting for the first time, 2.1% were defered to go to health facilities for fear of giving blood, 20.4% were afraid of hurt the needle during the blood collection. The mean pain intensity was found as 2.33±1.23 during bloodletting in donors. Training status of individuals were found to be significantly correlated with the state anxiety scale total score (p<0.05). Coclusion: Individuals who were donating blood are feeling low level pain. It was observed that in approximately half of individuals were experiencing negative symptoms afterwards bloodletting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
