Abstract

The author discusses the potential for success and failure for U.S. President Barack Obama in his second term after the 2012 election. Bipartisanship, opposition party conflict, and the experience of second term presidents are discussed, and the policies of presidents such as Bill Clinton, Dwight Eisenhower, and George W. Bush are described. Obama's negotiations with Republicans over tax increases and his policies for children of illegal immigrants are mentioned, and issues such as Clinton's environmental conservation efforts and Eisenhower's National Defense Education Act are discussed.
