Abstract

The article discusses Indian psalmody in Massachusetts Bay Colony, focusing on the years 1651 to 1675. It considers colonial sources that documented Indians singing psalms in 1651 in Natick, in 1674 in Wabquissit, and in 1675 in Brookfield. The author reflects on Puritan-Indian relations, particularly focusing on the Massachusett and Nipmuck Indians. She considers Indian translations of psalms, the role of missionary John Eliot, and the establishment of praying towns, or villages designed to encourage Christian lifestyles among Indian converts.
