Abstract

The article examines the relationship between conservatism and scientific research in the U.S., focusing on ways in which Republican Party policies have failed to support scientific and technological innovations, resulting in a decrease in support of the Republicans by scientists. The article provides a chronology of the Republican Party's stance on scientific issues including environmentalism, climate change, pollution, and environmental protection and explores how economic policies related to free market capitalism and consumption have influenced their view. Other topics include the book "Limits to Growth," the economist Julian Simon, and the Cold War.
