Abstract
- In this article, the author reflects on how the work of art critics and philosophers impacts aesthetic taste. Particular focus is given to the influence of the 1757 essay "Of the Standard of Taste," which was written by the philosopher David Hume. Three major subjects are examined including how criticism stands up to the test of time, how taste preference influences criticism and how many academics seek out critics whose tastes they share. The author utilizes the work of various philosophers to build his case including Noël Carroll, Alan Goldman and Ted Cohen.
