Accommodation and Resistance: Classical Mu'tazilites on Ḥadīth.

An essay is presented which discusses the theological dispute on the ḥadīth, and particularly over the theological report "khabar al-wāḥid" (report of the individual), between the adherents of the early Islamic theological school of thought the Muʿtazilites and the Islamic movement the ahl al-ḥadīth. The theological schools of thought of the Baṣran Muʿtazilites and the Baghdādīs are discussed.
