Abstract

The article considers environmental engineering related to hydraulic fracturing in prospecting for shale gas and petroleum. The large amounts of water used in hydraulic fracturing is noted. Efforts by companies engaged in hydraulic fracturing to recycle and reuse the water employed in hydraulic fracturing, both to lower costs and reduce strain on water supply, are discussed. Alternative sources of water for hydraulic fracturing are considered, especially drainage water from abandoned mines.
