Abstract
- The 2008 presidential campaign was a benchmark in Virginia's political history because it was the first presidential campaign in almost five decades that saw any real competition for Virginia's vote. While long term demographic changes were necessary for Virginia to become competitive, election specific issues were crucial to Virginia's transition from a reliably Republican state to a state that Democrats won in 2008.
