Abstract
- The article discusses the English language knowledge among Chinese people. Expatriates or Expats in Beijing are reportedly teaching English whether as a full-time occupation or as a way to earn extra cash alongside studies or work. It is stated that Chinese people learn basic English in school but the general level of oral English remains poor. It is noted that the growing urban middle and upper classes have started hiring English tutors for their children on top of extracurricular commitments.
